What is the Squeeze Momentum Indicator?

The Squeeze Momentum Indicator, developed by John Carter, is designed to identify periods when volatility is low (a “squeeze”) and a potential breakout is likely. It combines Bollinger Bands and Keltner Channels to detect the squeeze, and uses momentum to predict the direction of the breakout once the squeeze ends.

This indicator is especially popular among traders looking to time explosive moves following consolidation phases — making it a great tool for both swing and intraday strategies.

How it Works

• When Bollinger Bands are inside Keltner Channels, the market is in a squeeze — indicating low volatility.
• When the squeeze releases, a breakout move often follows. The squeeze histogram shows the direction and strength of momentum during and after this release.
